1st Vlog
Pah! I've posted my first vlog! I know there are a few things wrong with this vlog. (Hey! It's my first! Gimme a break!) I know there are (wasted) space between the top frame and my head. I'll do better next time. My partner stated that I was not myself. I guess I was concerned with my webcam. I didn't know if it would be blurry or not. So far, it looks ok. Anyways, I'm excited to have finally posted a vlog.
In this vlog, I address the issue some Deaf people making homophobic remarks and insensitive comments against other minorities, particularly against the Latinos. I just thought I'd say something and raise an awareness about our comments.

Larry! Welcome to vlog world :)
You brought up good points especially regarding the gay bar. Personally I don't care and if people think I'm gay just because I showed up, that's their problem. There are plenty of homophobes out there, yeah, but there are cool ones out there like me :)
hey there! LONG time NO see!! :)
oh.. and good job on your first vlog.. yay! with a little practice, you can blow us away.. grins.
on the serious side.. good points you made about double oppressions within the deaf community. We sure don't need more of that.
but dang! now you're ahead of me.. you just wait til *I* get a vlog going.. heh.
(and prolly get 'stage fright')
:)
keep it up.. and a hello to Kevvie for me.
Rob
Great 1st vlog!! The more we talk about injustice/oppression, the more we can grow. Thank you for speaking up! I look forward to more of your vlogs.
Hi, Larry!
Nice to see your face! :)
I think this is wonderful that more people are vlogging to discuss important issues that they felt strongly about.
However, I learned after my first vlog, where I made a too strong statement when I said, "Deaf Community" - implying EVERYONE in it behaved negatively towards me.
Hearing people do too.
There are so many people (deaf, hearing, or whatever) who are homophobes.
Yes, I'm with RF Walker - we do NOT need double oppressions.
We just have to keep bringing up issues and everyone will realize and work together.
I mean, look at how we all picked up "vlog" sign just like that!
That's how powerful vLogging is!
I can only imagine how much more we can do "together" on vlogs!
Great job on your first vLog! :)
Barinthus - I share the same sentiment but at the same time it left me wondering who are true to their words.
Rob - Hi there! Yeah, it's been a long time! I'll be waiting for your vlog! ;-)
Candace & iammine - Yeah, I believe it is good to address and discuss these issues.
iammine - Yeah, I know what you mean about saying "Deaf community". I caught that as I was reviewing. I'll keep that in mind the next time.
Thanks y'all!
Congrats on your 1st Vlog. You picked a great topic to start with as well.
I myself am a deaf woman and I'm also a lesbian. I have socialized with hearing and deaf community. When it comes to gathering, the hearing people have a problem with it as well. I've inquired both the deaf and the hearing community as to why they would have a problem in the gay surrounding. They had pretty much the same answer. They fear that they (the so called open mind straights)would be "picked up" or hit on by their same sex. I have replied to them, "I fear of the opposite sex hitting on me when I'm in a straight environment too."
That's when it really hit them. We can have the same problem as the straight community. Sometime we need to remind others that we are just like them as well and have same concerns in various environments.
Hi, Larry! Great to see you vlogging! You did a pretty good job with your very first vlog. Many valid points were raised that need to be addressed since discrimination and oppression do occur within the deaf community.
well done, larry! :) yeah i agree with what you said about the oppression. it's such an unfortunate thing that people could be narrow-minded when it comes to the mask of their own true feelings. homophobic comments are really not necessary, but guess it exists. especially in the deaf community, it's harder on us deaf gay people. it's true when i came out to my hearing family and everyone's seem to be accepting but the deaf community - they took the news harder. hmmph. keep vlogging!
Hey Larry!!!! So good to see you in Vlog. You did a good job. It is important to address these issues. This is one of the best media that we use in order to raise an awareness about our diverse people in Deaf community. Welcome to Vlogland.
Aidan
Hey Larry, it is good seeing you again. Where are you now? Ha. Im still down in Texas. Good job on your first vlog! Each time we do our Vlog, our confidence gets better. Keep it going. See you next time!
I'm happy to see you coming on board! Your message is something that many of us need to hear!
What would your suggestion have been for us who have been in the same situation as mentioned in Joey Baer's vlog?
Since I live in San Diego, there are many Mexican immigrants who work all over the city. I do find it problematic at times to communicate with them on paper/pen. I try to gesture with them and that can help a bit.
I have to admit that I do feel offended that they don't understand English when they are working and living in this country. If they are going to move to another country, they should make a full effort to learn the language, both spoken and written.
For example, if I moved to France, I would never assume that I could get along well there if I continued to use English and don't make a heartfelt effort to learn the French language.
Deb - Exactly. It's easy to point at the flaws of the minority. Just direct that finger back to the majority and they'll realize they have the same flaws.
MZ, Billy & Aidan - Thanks for your comments. As I said earlier in a comment to another, we need to raise and discuss these issues.
Jana - Long time!!! :-) Good to hear from you! I'm in the DC area. Been here since '98. Sure do miss Texas!!! *hugs*
Welcome to vlogsphere and am glad to see you aboard!
You brought up some great questions for us to ponder. The oppression you discussed is probably called internalized oppression. That term has popped in some blogs/vlogs lately and we need to discuss and understand this more. The more we talk about internalized oppression, it will help us to look at ourselves and how we can reduce the oppression.
And you said it right that we need to take more responsible of what we say. The more we do that, we will earn more respect for each other.
Jared -
Thanks!
As for my suggestion in regards to Joey's situation, I don't exactly have a "cut & dried" answer. Seems that, like others, the best approach is to have someone else voice out your orders. Of course, some Deafies would have issues with that in regards to dependency. For me, whatever solution works in that moment, take advantage of it.
Now, my question for you is why do you feel offended?
For me, there are many possible factors as to why some Latinos cannot read/write/speak English. That's a whole other blog/vlog. Keep in mind that while I'm defending Latinos, I'm also alarmed due to the fact that Latinos are the fastest-growing minority in America.
I guess maybe we should direct our questions to employers who hire people (not just Latinos) who are not quite competent and qualified to work in the service industry that involves a high volume with customer interactions.
Larry, Larry...
Excellent Vlog. One suggestion. Stop making excuses for yourself with negative comments about your vlog before we get to see it. Of course we all improve our vlogs... just be yourself and I think you've done very well with technical stuff (cam, lighting, etc.)
Now the topics...whoo! To be honest with you I NEVER thought about having DPHH going to a gay bar. I'm a Gay Deaf man and I'm proud of my identity. Just that "this idea" never crossed my mind! We have our own DGPHH (Deaf Gay Professional Happy Hour) meeting once a month at a gay bar in Boston.
Kudos to Rob Rice for pushing this idea. It's a risky thing to do. Do I support it? Yes and No. Let me state my reasons:
YES-of course increase the awareness that we, gay people, are just like everyone else! Increase the understanding and develop strong allies between gay & straight.
NO-have to think about those individuals who are closeted. I know many of us would argue that they need to "lighten up" and "get out of the closet". I don't go into details on that, just that we need to be more sensitive because if the straight folks come in and they said something inappropriate which might be offensive to those closeted folks.
Mmm...this is a topic I will continue to explore with an open mind. I rarely go to DPHH (they're bit boring for me) so I can't really say much about it. Thanks for bringing this up here Larry and Rob for pushing this.
Now... I haven't seen Joey's vlog about ordering food (I plan on viewing it after this).
I have experience dealing with minorities who work in restaurants and there were lot of misunderstandings in the past... what I have learned, Larry, is to take the menu and point to the food that I wanted. I guarantee you that those folks who don't know enough English will know exact what food I wanted. Just use your fingers to point at the picture or the words on the menu. The waiter will look at the menu and will remember exact where I pointed it.
Anyway I've babbled on... Larry, if you're interested, check out my vlogs in Youtube.

Larry,
Glad your vlogging now :)
I wonder... is there such a place called lesbian bar? Or is it same thing as gay bar?
gwlj
Good job on your first vlogging! Thanks for bringing these issues out in the open.
As for trying to communicate in restaurants, I have found Latino people easier to communicate because they are more receptive to gestures more so than other nationality. Other nationality would stand there and stare and not knowing what you want to order. It could be American people who also cannot read and write too so we cannot blame it on the minority people. Sometimes people will run to their manager to ask what you want to order so I feel that they are trying their best and patience pays off at times.
Larry, are you fluent in Spanish oral or sign language? I am just curious :-)
Joey - :-)
Mikey - Cool idea about the DGPHH. In DC, my partner and I host a monthly Deaf GLBT coffee social in Dupont Circle. We get a good number of people each month.
You know, you brought up a solution that I've brought up. Pointing at the menu. I do that all the time when ordering.
Grant - There is such a thing as a lesbian bar.
Michel - No, I'm not fluent in Spanish, spoken or signed. However, I'll try to bring in a word or a phrase here and there from what I can remember.
I guess I'm somewhat understanding of their linguistic plight. My relatives speak Spanish. Unfortunately, I don't. However, I can pick up here and there.
Thanks, y'all!
I enjoyed your first vlog. I really appreciate you bringing up both issues. As a Latino, you gave me the inspiration, as a Latina, to start my own vlog.
First issue regarding the gay bar is very important. We as a society need to be more fluid and tolerant (i dont mean to put up with, but rather to accept and cherish) with cultures within our Deaf culture ( I avoid using the word, "subculture" because all cultures are equally important).
My mother came to this county not knowing English. Her native language is Spanish. 44 years after moving to this country, she still struggles with writing English. She can speak and read English, but writing is difficult for her to master. I often write for her.
United States is historically composed of people who arrived from other countries, often speaking different languages. Our ancestors came here seeking better lives and new dreams. We all are really cut from the same cloth.
Congrats on your vlog. I enjoyed watching you.

Barb DiGi asked that I paste her comments below. :-)
Hi Larry!
You have now broke a vlog virgin and the rest will be a piece of cake.
It is nice to see having a vlog representive of both Hispanic and Gay groups that will help us gain better awareness and understanding. I never even thought about this issue about who and where to attend that matters.
Knowing that there is a boom of Hispanic immigrants in America, for them to know how to read English takes time.
Well to answer Joey, I would just make an extra effort to communicate with them in a different way once I realize they could not read. If they don't understand my writing then I will do a gesture like a chicken (shooking head like a no-no) then act like a cow by saying moo-moo (nodding head like a yes-yes..heck we were speech trained for that heh?). So let's experiment that!

Julie,
Glad to know that you've been inspired to start a vlog. Let me know when you've posted your first.
I totally agree with your comments.
WOW, Larry! You go girl - you have sparked a very good discussion. I totally agree with you.
I dont know if you remember but we did have a discussion about more and more hispanic working in America. Like for example when I came to your work for lunch - I wrote down my order and showed it to a hispanic lady - she panicked and showed it to her co-worker who helped read my order to her.
I actually felt bad for her and I told myself that I should have write it down in spanish (not that I am fluent in spanish but I can just somewhat write) And I was thinking that we all should learn as many language as we can.
Now about DPHH being at a gay bar - that is a like, "WOW, thats a big step." It is unfortunate that we can to see negative response from our own community toward the idea of have DPHH being hosted at a gay bar, tsk!
Smiles, Big kudos to you on your first vLog! *hugs*
I've asked Larry numerous times to make some edit - althought it may not be a big deal but I just want to mention this. The last paragraph: "Its unforntunate that we can to see negative response..."
*embarrassing!*
I meant to say, "Its unfortunate that we HAVE to see negative response..." Hee, gonna try and proofread before I post my comment :-)
No thanks to you, Larry :-P
Yes if the truth be known, in some moments I can bruit about that I acquiesce in with you, but you may be considering other options.
